Content

Commodity futures markets - and financial markets in general - play a growing part in the price discovery of world commodity prices. This class presents principles of financial markets, in general, and commodity futures markets, in particular. Specific previous knowledge of students on these topics ist not expected.

This class is divided into a theory part at the beginning of the semester (with a subsequent test) and an applied part during the semester where students are expected to trade through the commodity futures trading game (http://www.bvwtm.uni-kiel.de/index.php) with written short reports and a short presentation on their trading.

Previous knowledge expected

Specific knowledge on financial and commodity futures markets are not expected. However, basic (micro-)economic, mathematical and statistical skills are indeed previously expected and will not specifically explained in this class.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students should gain an overview of theoretical knowledge and, in particular, applied skills in financial and commodity futures markets.
