Content

Environmental and bio-resource managers have to deal with the design, analysis and optimization of supply chains. Along these chains, processes are used to extract, convert and refine substances in order to achieve products, services and/or final energy. Process technology covers the technical aspects of supply chains. We discuss mechanical, thermal and chemical processes as well as the necessary apparatuses and their design.

The main content of the course Process Engineering I is:
1. Motivation for studying process engineering
2. Description of apparatuses using technical drawings
3. Description of processes using process flow diagrams
4. Mass balances applied to supply chains and performance figures
.

Previous knowledge expected

High school graduation skills expected

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Knowledge:
The students know the basic rules of technical drawing (front, side, and plan view, line types, dimensioning).
The students know important types of apparatuses like pums, compressors, heat exchangers, separators, et cetera and they can describe their basic functionality.
The students know the basic rules of drawing process flow diagrams (block diagram, process flowsheet without and with additional information, piping and instrumentation diagram).

Skills:
The students can read and interpret technical drawings.
The students can correctly draw simple technical sketches including dimensioning.
The students can read and interpret process flow diagrams.
The students can draw process flow diagrams of simple processes including information concerning flow quantities and basic equipment for measurement and control.
The students can formulate and calculate component-wise mass balances over a sequence of processes.

Competences:
The students are able to discuss technical processes with experts in a qualified way.
The students are able to judge on the plausibility of process options based on component-wise mass balances.
