Ecological and landscape-shaping role of woody plants; origin and evolutionary differentiation of seed plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms); the Quaternary ice ages as the cause of species depletion in European woody flora; general characteristics of spermatophytes; systematics and morphology of Central European, American and Asian representatives of gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Understanding the evolution of woody plants from the most primitive gymnosperms to the most evolved angiosperms; recognition of Central European woody species and some important exotics by means of conspicuous characteristics; sites, geographic distribution and commercial use of the species
