Content

The lecture covers various phenomena and processes that are important in the field of agricultural sciences using physical models.

The models are simple enough to be understood with the physics, chemistry, and mathematics learned during the course of study. On the other hand, they are complex enough to describe the processes adequately.

Contents:

Physics of drying - Description of heat and moisture transport
Drying of agricultural products - Practical drying methods for fruit and coffee
Heat conduction in soil - Heat conduction equation and its solution
Soil temperature - Measurements, influences
Spectroscopy - Light, absorption, photometry, analysis methods
Rheology of agricultural products - Description of the deformation behavior of biological materials
Flow and throughput - Laminar and turbulent flows in nature and technology

Previous knowledge expected

Knowledge equivalent to that gained in an introductory physics lecture and an introductory mathematics lecture

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The student is able to understand the physics and chemical aspects behind some processes that are relevant for characterization, treatment, processing and storage of agricultural goods
