Identification of the various stages of wood-destroying insects; Detection and identification of wood-staining and wood-decaying fungi (e.g. Serpula lacrimans, Coniophora puteana, Oligoporus placenta, Ophiostoma spp.) using morphological and molecular methods; Types of wood decay; Histological investigations on wood infected by fungi or infested by insects; Specific staining methods; Certification of wood preservatives using test organisms (demonstration at HFA); Function, demonstration and application of diagnostic tools.

After successful completion of this course, students are familiar with techniques and working methods used for the detection, identification and for investigations on diseases and pests of wood and wood-based products. They also acquire knowledge on testing methods for wood preservatives using test organisms. MS- and PhD students in the field "Diseases, Pests and Protection of Wood and Wood-based Products" acquire competence in carrying out experimental work.
