The course is divided in a lecture and seminar part.

Topics of the lecture units:
- History of recreation and leisure, definitions of leisure, recreation and eco-tourism
Leisure trends
- User characteristics and recreation areas
- Conflicts between recreation and nature and conflicts among users of recreation areas
- Crowding theories and concepts
- Selected visitor monitoring methods
- Analysis of visitor data
- Visitor management and management frameworks

Seminar part:
Development and conducting a survey of recreationists in Viennese recreation areas.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students are able to identify different user groups visiting recreation and conservation areas, and know their recreational needs
Students know causes for user conflicts and visitor crowding
They know methods to solve user conflicts and conflicts between user groups and conservation issues
They know methods to monitor and manage recreational use
Students can develop basics for a sustainable visitor management
