Content

Building on the lecture Landscape Management and Nature Conservation I, the lecture focuses on strategies, challenges and instruments for planning in the field of nature conservation.

The following topics will be addressed:
- Restoration ecology & European Nature Restoration Regulation
- Status and evaluation of protected areas with a focus on Natura2000
- Biodiversity in the city (urban ecology)
- Cultivated agricultural landscapes, connection between agricultural activities and biodiversity
- Nature-compatible energy transition
- Conserving and improving water and wetland habitats
- Biodiversity in forest habitats
- Connectivity of habitats and biotope networks

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The graduates of the course:
- know the connections between human activities and biodiversity
- are able to name the nature conservation potential in different habitats
- discuss possibilities for mitigation and improvement measures in habitats
- understand the methods of biotope network planning and compensation planning.
- can argue the influence of agriculture on species decline and its contribution to the conservation of biodiversity and biotope networks
- recognize the challenges for landscape planning and nature conservation in the context of societal developments and against the background of climate change and the energy transition
- use the theoretical knowledge they have acquired about methods, strategies and instruments to answer practical questions about specialist planning in the field of nature conservation and landscape management.
