The course “Introduction to landscape planning and nature conservation planning” is divided into lecture and seminar units and will be organised by the Institute of Landscape planning and the Institute of Landscape development, recreation and conservation planning.
CONTENT of LANDSCAPE PLANNING part: The landscape planning lecture section covers two blocks: open space planning, in which open space typologies, planning and policy instruments, and cross-cutting topics in open space planning are examined in a more urban context (based on Hersperger et al 2021: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10980-021-01193-y); the second block addresses the topic of landscape and landscape planning from a rural perspective, focusing on landscape approaches and cultural landscape research.
In the SEMINAR on landscape planning, we will deepen our practical insights into selected topics related to the lecture part during a one-day excursion within Vienna. The excursion is structured as a transect walk. This allows us to experience urban landscapes directly. Observations and discussions along a route provide insights into spatial structures, social uses and dynamics, as well as ecological functions. The aim of this excursion is to interpret urban spaces as socio-ecological systems and to understand landscape ecology concepts (according to Hersperger et al. 2021) through real locations.
The excursion is part of the STEOP Landscape Planning seminar. The excursion takes place outdoors and in all weather conditions. Please bring weatherproof clothing, a smartphone or camera, and note-taking materials. You will receive detailed information prior to the excursion after successfully registering for the seminar.
CONTENT of NATURE PLANNING part:
Lecture parts:
- Development and instruments of nature conservation
- Renaturation of ecosystems
- Protected area planning (with focus on national parks and biosphere reserves)
- Effects of recreational use on nature conservation
Seminar part:
We will talk about selected ecologically valuable landscape areas and analyse the demands of different stakeholders (agriculture, forestry, hunting, recreationists) on these habitats. We will discuss the conflicts that can arise for nature conservation and what strategies are available to counter these conflicts.
Based on various maps (e.g. Franziszeischer Kataster, aerial photos), we analyse how and why selected landscape areas in Austria have changed and what these changes mean for the occurrence of certain animal and plant species.
