Content

Basics of air pollution control, overview of the origin and sources of air pollution, air pollutants, their effects on health and ecosystems, influences of meteorology and topography on the spread of air pollutants, functioning of air quality measurement networks, use of modelling calculations. Reduction measures, current air quality situation and developments in Austria and Europe, prevention strategies).
Legal framework and instruments, as well as their functioning and effectiveness at the international, EU, and national level.

Previous knowledge expected

The course is held in a biennial cycle, blocked after clearance with the students. Previous knowledge about the Austrian legislation and the administrative structures are helpful. A script is available in the lecture.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Giving an introduction and providing a general overview of the basics of air pollution control and air quality in the EU and Austria with special emphasis on measures and legal/political instruments at various levels.
