The European Green Deal has brought the issue of textile circularity into sharp focus for both the public and the textile industry. Phrases like "Fast fashion is out of fashion," textile recycling, bans on the destruction of unsold textiles, mandatory separate collection schemes, Extended Producer Responsibility, and the Digital Product Passport have made global headlines in recent months and years.
The lecture "Circular Economy in Textiles" is designed for all interested master's students at BOKU University. It aims to deepen your understanding of:
- The chemistry of (natural) fiber productionProduction processes for fibers and textiles
- Key elements of the European Green Deal and an overview of the legal framework relevant to textile recycling
- R-Strategies (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, etc.)
- Recycling technologies
- The future of chemical recycling in the textile industry
- Developing business cases for successful implementation

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the chemistry of fiber production, analyze textile recycling production processes, identify opportunities for circular economy practices, interpret the European Green Deal, apply R-strategies, evaluate recycling technologies, assess chemical recycling of textiles and develop business cases along the value chain.
