Spatial and environmental assessment instruments

Contents of the seminar part:

Using the example of municipalities located in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve, students learn about the relevance
of local spatial planning as a contribution to environmental, landscape and nature conservation.
Working in small groups, the students first conduct a SWOT analysis of a selected community to determine
how 1) the requirements of the biosphere park are being addressed in terms of spatial development potential and
how 2) the objectives of the biosphere park, and in particular the ecosystem services associated with it
(e.g. protection against natural hazards or cultural ecosystem services) are reflected and supported in spatial planning.
Building on this, students discuss whether and to what extent instruments of protected area management in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Park,
natural hazard prevention and the forest development plan can contribute to good spatial planning practice at the local level.

Previous knowledge expected

Knowledge of the political and administrative system of Austria

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Graduates of this course...

- are familiar with the objectives and fields of action as well as the most important methods, instruments and processes of spatial planning.

- are familiar with the technical vocabulary of spatial planning.

- can describe the organisation of spatial planning in Austria and its interfaces with infrastructure planning (especially in water management and transport).

- can assess the importance of spatial planning for infrastructure planning.

- can read and interpret the planning content of supra-local and local spatial planning.

- are able to explain the connections between the use of spatial resources and their impacts, especially on settlement and transport development, and to select planning methods and instruments appropriate to the problem.

- can identify their role as actors in spatial planning processes and contribute to finding solutions to land use conflicts.
You can find more details like the schedule or information about exams on the course-page in BOKUonline.
