Course descriptions
Content
The course covers various key topics relating to vegetation engineering, landscaping, green-blue infrastructure and rainwater management.
Groups SS 2026
Group 1 Path and square design – paving (Dorothee Marx)
Group 2 Natural stone wall construction (Stefan Locher)
Group 3 Use of woody plants (Hildegund Fauler/Jakob Grohmann)
Group 4 Vegetation technology (Irene Zluwa/Udo Buttinger)

The main topics of the individual groups are described in more detail in the ADDITIONAL INFORMATION section.

Important basics such as the properties of building materials, materials, soils, substrates and plants, construction techniques, etc. are taught in lectures.
Based on surveys of planting and construction projects, questions about building structures and vegetation technology will be addressed with regard to construction methods, maintenance, stress, sustainability, etc.
The process of building or planting will be examined as a whole, including topics such as the availability and cost of building materials. Ecological and economic issues such as regional availability, transport-related availability of materials and plants, and building material recycling are taken into account.
After studying the relevant topics in theory, students gain hands-on experience with materials and construction during the building days, learning and trying out craft techniques and the proper use of tools. They develop an understanding of organisational and construction site processes, the actual amount of work involved, unforeseeable adversities, limitations, etc.

Previous knowledge expected

A positive grade (depending on the main topic) in the following courses is recommended:
LAWI100113 Fundamentals of Landscape Construction Technology, Vegetation Technology and Engineering Biology, LAWI100109 Dendrology

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students understand construction processes, construction site procedures and their organisation, as well as their implementation in landscaping. They can apply the theoretical principles of vegetation technology and landscaping technology in practice.
Students can carry out manual tasks independently and apply building materials and construction techniques. Landscaping solutions for climate change adaptation, rainwater management and biodiversity enhancement are planned and implemented. The availability of materials and ecological and economic aspects are presented and compared.
Students are able to assess the execution of structures, construction processes and construction site management. Natural, resource-saving and recyclable building materials and construction techniques are used in theory, planning and practice
