Together with the “Bioprocess Engineering Exercises,” these exercises are part of the “Applied Microbiology” module for the LBT bachelor's program (H217).
In the “Applied Microbiology Exercises,” the following will be covered:
- monitoring of a water sample using practical methods and a closer look at the role of drinking water in Austria and other countries around the world
- production of PETase in shake-flask experiment using a recombinant E. coli strain, which is then used to break down PET packaging
- citric acid is produced and quantified using the fungus A. niger
- the degradation of polyhydroxybutyric acid is investigated using the bacterium Comamonas testosteroni
Before the practical part, the students draw up a schedule according to which all experiments are carried out. The exercises are concluded with a presentation of the results, the submission of a final report, and a final discussion.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Allgemeine Mikrobiologie Übungen
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After completing the exercises, students will be able to draw up a schedule for experiments.
Students will have mastered practical methods for monitoring drinking water in accordance with the Austrian Drinking Water Ordinance.
Students will be able to produce biotechnological products on a small scale with the help of microorganisms.
