Content

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to describe the economically viable, high-yielding, and quality-assured cultivation of the most economically important types of pome, stone, and berry fruit in Austria.
This includes knowledge of site selection, variety and rootstock selection, propagation, pruning, soil management and cover crop management, the fundamentals of tree health, as well as the basics of quality and marketing of fruit products.

Basic knowledge of fruit growing from the course AGRI100423 "Fruit and Wine Growing"

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- explain the general principles of fruit production and name key figures for international, European, and Austrian fruit growing
- plan orchards of all fruit types according to practical and economic considerations and contribute innovative ideas
- identify the most important marketing channels for fruit in Austria
- differentiate between the various methods of cultivation, harvesting, and storage of pome, stone, and berry fruits and evaluate their advantages and disadvantages
- understand the physiological principles of pome, stone, and berry fruits
- understand and interpret the latest research findings in the field of pome, stone, and berry fruits
- name important varieties of the main fruit types in Austria
- explain important methods of plant cultivation and propagation for the various fruit types
- name the legal and technical requirements for organic fruit production in Europe and Austria
- make decisions on management measures for the most important fruit types and justify these decisions
- apply the acquired knowledge to solve specific technical problems at the farm level
