The purpose of the seminar is to prepare for the excursion to Costa Rica in February 2026. The main topics will be ecology and regeneration of tropical forests, diversity of plants and animals, conservation, and land use. Students will present selected general topics on Costa Rica (geography, land use, ecosystems …) and more detailed presentations on the main themes during the practical work at the La Gamba field station. •
Tropical Forest Regeneration
Functional Traits in Tropical Forest Ecology
Remote Sensing for Forest Structure Analysis
Orchid Bees and Their Pollination Biology
Wildlife Monitoring
Bird Diversity Across a Land-Use Gradient
A final round of presentations will either focus on specific ecosystems we visit or highlight specific species we will likely encounter.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Participants will be familiar with important tropical ecosystems, especially rainforests, and understand how these are shaped by the environment (climate, soil, humans) and the role played by selected groups of animals and plants. They will be able to understand and explain interrelationships and identify important key species.
