This course focuses on the mathematical modelling and analysis of biological phenomena. It consists of three interconnected parts. The first develops the underlying mathematical theory; the second leverages this theory to explore biological systems; and the the gives students the opportunity to apply the concepts from the first two parts through exercises.
The mathematical theory touches on difference equations, linear algebra, partial derivatives, and simple ordinary differential equations. These tools are then used in the applied part to describe and analyse a range of biological systems, in particular, in the context of population biology.
Students who successfully complete the course may begin a bachelor’s thesis focused on mathematical modelling immediately afterward.

Students will be able to model and analyze biological processes using difference equations and simple ordinary differential equations, and visualize them with Python.
