Group 1 (Arnberger): Planning and zoning of large protected areas
What international guidelines (IUCN, UNESCO...) and national legal bases are there for different types of protected areas such as national parks, biosphere reserves, wilderness areas, World Heritage Sites? What types of zoning are there? What are the requirements for the respective zones? What conflicts can arise from this?

Students work in small groups and analyze the zoning of different protected areas and types of protected areas in different countries (desktop research). The students compare the zoning in the protected areas both with the (inter)national guidelines and between the individual protected areas and protected area types. These comparisons give them an insight into the advantages and disadvantages of the zoning systems and enable them to identify future problems arising from the respective zoning and solve zoning problems. This gives them an insight into sustainable protected area planning.

Group 2 (Assoc. Prof. Radinger-Peer): This course explores how urban heat can be addressed in urban planning, with a particular focus on Seestadt Aspern and approaches that go beyond purely technical solutions. The course combines approaches from urban and landscape planning, nature-based solutions, “more-than-human” perspectives, embodiment theories, and artistic strategies, and is conducted in collaboration with faculty from the University of Applied Arts. The course centers on examining heat from various angles:
- from the perspective of planning (tools, governance, strategies...),
- from the perspective of residents (daily life, vulnerabilities, perceptions),
- from a more-than-human and embodied perspective
- from the perspective of artistic strategies.
The groups will develop a baseline assessment (including maps, observations, and more-than-human perspectives), a preliminary plan (strategic proposals for dealing with heat, green spaces, and water structures), and a detailed proposal for a selected sub-area.

The course concludes with a final presentation and a reflective paper on the role of more-than-human, artistic, and embodied methods in landscape planning.

Group 1: attendance of the lecture VO 853307 Planning and management of protected areas would be advantageous.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Group 1 (Prof. Arne Arnberger).
The students
- know the international (IUCN, UNESCO...) guidelines and national regulations for protected area planning, and for protected area types (national parks, biosphere reserves, wilderness areas, WHS) with focus on zoning
- name the various zoning systems of protected areas and other areas;
- notice problems arising from the relevant zoning;
- improve zoning and solve zoning problems.

Group 2 Radinger-Peer:
- Students learn about the challenges and planning approaches involved in addressing urban heat (based on scientific literature as well as a field trip to Seestadt Aspern)
- Students become familiar with interdisciplinary research methods (planning-based and “more-than-human” approaches)
- Students become familiar with artistic approaches and their potential applications in developing solutions
- Students gain experience in interdisciplinary collaboration on the topic of urban heat.
