"Decision support for the solution of complex multicriteria problems"

After a general introduction to decision theory, the lecturer will give a brief overview over decision support systems for solving complex problems. The students will work out solutions for a specific question (usually in natural resources management) which is poorly structured and complex.

Didactic concept: introduction into theory, essay workout with indepht literature review (scientific essay), application of DSS, presentation of results and discussion of results at the end of the course.

Previous knowledge expected

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The students will be albe to answer the following questions: Why is decision making (DM) one of the most important tasks in our society? How can DM be improved? Which methods may be applied. what are their advantages and disadvantages? Which are important fields of application of decision support systems (DSS)?

These typical questions will be discussed within this seminar; they form the basis for the continuous application with decision problems. The students learn how to work out solutions for highly complex, poorly structured decision problems by applying DSS. They will be able to present and discuss their findings within the class and to critical reflect the outcome of their research in comparison with existing research in the field. Overall, they learn about:
* management of DM
* solving poorly structured, complex decision problems using a convenient DSS
* multi criteria decision making (MCDM)
* state of the art / theories in DM
* DM tools
* new approaches in DM
* examples: strategic management decisions,investment decisons, project selection, relocation decision, mergers & acquisition, evaluation/selection of future corporate strategies, etc.

After the course the students will be able to structure, analyze and solve unstructured, complex decision problems in accordance with the state of the art in decision making.
