Content

Starting from the central tasks of recreation planning, such as
- securing, developing and improving the quality of recreational opportunities,
- considering different user needs and analysing potential user conflicts, and
- supporting environmentally and socially compatible recreational use,
the course addresses basic approaches to recreation-use assessment and visitor monitoring as well as the role of recreation planning in other planning fields.

A further focus is placed on strategies and instruments of visitor management and visitor guidance. These include, among others:
- zoning approaches and spatial visitor-guidance measures,
carrying-capacity concepts,
- Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS),
- Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC),
- Visitor Impact Management (VIM), and
- communicative and digital approaches to visitor guidance.

The contents are illustrated and discussed using current examples from national and international planning practice.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

- Overview of the central tasks and significance of recreation planning as an independent field
- Knowledge of basic approaches to analysing user needs, user conflicts, recreation-use assessment and visitor monitoring
- Knowledge of selected strategies and instruments of visitor management and visitor guidance
- Ability to select and critically assess suitable planning instruments for different recreation-planning challenges
