Content

Drawing on communicative and collaborative planning theory (e.g., Patsy Healey) and the ladder models of participation (e.g., Sherry Arnstein), we develop an understanding of participation and reflect on issues of power and opportunities for co-creation using concrete spatial examples.

The course combines brief presentations, moderated discussions, and reflection on sample projects. The use of generative AI tools is permitted; transparency and independent reflection are part of the assessment.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Knowledge
Following successful completion of this module, students will be able to explain key theoretical concepts of participatory and deliberative planning (principles and stages), identify the key methods of participatory and transdisciplinary planning, explain the theoretical and practical concepts of empirical social research, and identify relevant actors in participatory landscape and urban planning processes.
Skills
Graduates of this module can categorize the stages of participation using real-world examples and evaluate the effectiveness of various methods based on examples; they can also assess the theoretical and practical concepts of empirical social research used in participation and transdisciplinary planning, as well as their results.
Technical/Professional Competencies
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to test selected social science research methods in practice exercises, independently plan exemplary participatory processes, and implement them in practical projects.
Personal Competencies
Graduates of this module possess communication skills, the ability to interact responsibly with partners in participatory projects, and competencies in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary cooperation.
