Deforestation and Desertification

Global Change and Sustainability (GCS) in Focus http://www.boku.ac.at/17632.html?L=1  is an effort by the Center for Global Change and Sustainability to highlight some of the burning issues that affect our planet and our communities. Each month this page will be updated with a new topic and will include a short list of recommended literature (fact sheets, academic papers, articles, books) and a video with the aim of stimulating interest and discussion. As a venue for discussion of the topics presented here, all who are interested are welcome to come and take part in the GCS in Focus Stammtisch! http://www.boku.ac.at/17714.html?&L=1 The June topic is "Deforestation and Desertification". The German word "Stammtisch" is used to describe a table at a restaurant, bar or café that is reserved for certain "regulars" (i.e. frequent customers). The Global Change and Sustainability (GCS) Stammtisch provides an informal place for students, professors, practitioners and anyone else who is interested in global change and sustainability topics to come, relax and chat over a coffee, wine, etc. At the beginning of each month we'll post a new topic on our website http://www.boku.ac.at/17632.html?L=1 with a video, links to several relevant papers & articles, and links to the BOKU institutes and departments whose research is related to the subject area. The Stammtisch will work somewhat like a "book club". This means that it would be good to take a look at some of the information posted on our website concerning the topic (and/or other sources!) so that everyone can participate in the discussions. If, however, you don't have time to read any of the recommended articles or you feel that your knowledge in the topic of the month is limited, don't be shy! It's also a great way to learn something new in an open, friendly atmosphere! The GCS Stammtisch will be reserved for the last Tuesday of every month, starting at 6pm (18:00).
