Cuba is a popular example for urban farming and agroecological initiatives. On the 23rd of October students will present their impressions of the BOKU excursion to Cuba.

In May 2012, the Interdisciplinary Excursion to Organic Farming in Cuba took place. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the following scarcity of food, fuel as well as synthetic fertiliser a change of mind had become necessary. A reorganisation in direction to more sustainable forms of agriculture was induced. The Caribbean island today is known as a successful example for agroecological movements and urban food production. 15 students and 2 advisors of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna explored 10 days long the Cuban organic agriculture in Havana as well as in the nearby provinces.  On the 23rd of October at 18 o’clock they will share their experience and impressions will all who are interested in the hall of the Schwackhöfer-House. In this context the photo-exhibition “Agroecology, urban farming and agrarian innovations in Cuba” will be opened. Date: 23rd of October 2012 Location: Hall of the Schwackhöfer building Organiser: Working Group: Knowledge Systems and Innovation, Division of Organic Farming, Department of Sustainable Agricultural Systems
