Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Dynamics
Our research group investigates interactions between atmospheric chemistry and climate across global and regional scales using chemistry-transport and chemistry-climate models.
Current Research Topics:
- Impacts of water-rich eruptions like Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) on stratospheric chemistry, dynamics and climate (Zhu et al, 2025; Kuchar et al, 2025; Kuchar et al, 2026)
- Climate impacts of large volcanic eruptions (e.g. Pinatubo-like eruptions) and their model representations (Perny et al, 2025)
- Regional air quality under a changing climate and emissions and related health impacts (Mayer et al, 2022; Liu et al, 2023; Trimmel et al 2023; Moshammer et al, 2024; Preinfalk et al, 2026)
- Polar ozone: extremes, variability and trends (Rieder et al, 2025)
- Stratospheric temperature trends (Kult-Herdin et al, 2023)
- Potential improvements for climate communication and education by utilizing digital ecogames, such as Hotspot Earth (Steinhauser et al, 2026)
- Solar variability (irradiance & energetic particles) impacts on atmospheric chemistry (Shapiro et al, 2024)
- Energetic particle precipitation and geomagnetic field effects (Arsenovic et al, 2025)
- Dynamical and chemical contributions to tropospheric and total column ozone changes.
- Climate-driven changes in mycotoxigenic fungal habitat suitability (Balkova et al, 2026).
