Objective

Building on the great response to BeEcoVie, we are developing the digital, open-source tool hive.city in an interdisciplinary follow-up project. Hive.city intends to provide data on nectar availability, apiary density and ecological carrying capacity to interested stakeholders (e.g. beekeepers, city administrations). Our designated goal is to continue implementing bee-friendly urban planning in Vienna by improving urban habitats with flower-rich areas, protecting urban bee biodiversity and promoting sustainable beekeeping with appropriate colony numbers. The results will be incorporated into consulting, education and urban planning. Unexplored areas in Vienna will also be investigated regarding their wild bee fauna.

Hive.city

The online tool hive.city will be developed in a co-creative process with beekeepers and administrative staff from Vienna. The focus is to offer a solution for sustainable beekeeping, enable ecological spatial planning and to improve floral resources for bees in the city. Through the strong involvement of several interest groups, BeEcoVie 2 offers bottom-up decision-making. The tool targets to raise ecological awareness and enable self-empowering and sustainable decision-making. The collaboration can help to overcome the current divisions between different interest groups (beekeepers, city administration, wild bee experts).

Further, refining the ecological awareness of all participants can be accoplished. The collaboration aims to overcome current divisions between different interest groups (beekeepers, city administration, wild bee experts).

Additional wild bee surveys

To complete the data set on wild bees in Vienna, unstudied areas in Vienna will be investigated for wild bees during the 2026 vegetation period. For example, we will study unexplored areas in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve and include a survey of wild bees in Vienna's Gänsehäufl.
