Simon Swaffield is Emeritus Professor at Lincoln University NZ and 2019 Visiting Professor at the Institute of Landscape Architecture (ILA), Vienna. Following experience as a landscape architect and landscape planner in the UK he became programme leader, foundation head of department, and then Professor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University. He serves on several editorial boards of international landscape journals.

Simon’s research combines insights into theoretical foundations of landscape architecture with analysis of landscape values, dynamics and governance in NZ production and urban landscapes. His work involves collaborations and comparative studies in both North America and Europe.

In his guest lecture he will discuss distinctive features of Landscape Architecture in Aotearoa New Zealand relating to its postcolonial and dynamic landscape conditions, with examples focused on Canterbury including post-earthquake reconstruction and temporary and memorial landscapes.
