Freedom and responsibility

Freedom of research polarizes. Some people see it as an indispensable, not-negotiable and even unlimited prerequisite of knowledge search. Others – not at least against the background of the increasing application-orientation of research – are aware of potential risks. They see the limits of scientific freedom. Why should research be protected by special guarantees of freedom? What freedoms are referred to? Where do we need to draw fundamental borders? Is scientific freedom still in keeping with the times?
