The Institute of Landscape Architecture (ILA) is currently offering the following two internship positions for the Winter Semester 2024/25:

Position 1.

Internship at the institute of landscape architecture: communication

The Institute of Landscape Architecture at BOKU University Vienna is seeking an enthusiastic communication and social media intern - a storyteller. Throughout the year, the institute organises public lectures, exhibitions, and diverse activities as part of the bachelor's and master's programs in landscape planning and architecture. 

We are a young, enthusiastic team that is rapidly growing. We are working on diverse projects in landscape architecture and urbanism, contributing to new ways of living together in a time of uncertainty. Although many new ideas exist, the wider public often does not hear about them. In a time when we need to develop new imaginaries of the future, telling stories is of the utmost importance.

The intern will develop new formats to communicate our visions of a better world to a wider international audience. In accordance with the applicant, we are offering an internship position for 6-12 months through the Erasmus+ funding scheme. Students participate in communicating and further developing the institute's offline and online presence, providing them with unique insights into the work of research and university education. 

Basic knowledge of German is beneficial but optional for the internship. Affinity with graphics and social media management is required.  Knowledge of Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning Urbanism, Urban Planning, and architecture is a fundamental asset. Knowledge of communication is beneficial but optional. Students are welcome to apply for full-time and part-time internships.

A workplace will be provided throughout the internship. During their stay, students can also take advantage of university offers, such as language courses and the university library.

The Institute of Landscape Architecture cannot provide any salary for the internship performance. In addition, no expenses for accommodation, travel, food or health insurance can be covered. The income solely relies on the ERASMUS+ funding.

Position 2

Internship Contributing to the research of:
Extractive Landscapes - An Investigation in Europe

The Interreg project, ReInd: BBG: Reindustrialisation Following the Brownfield is Better than Greenfield Principle, is a transnational research project at the Institute of Landscape Architecture at BOKU University. It is a collaborative project with 15 other partners over the span of 2,5 (start January 2024).

Are you passionate about the intersection of landscape architecture and design, urbanism, environmental justice, and the well-being of both humans and non-human entities? We invite you to be part of an internship opportunity at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). This unique opportunity invites passionate individuals to contribute to the cutting-edge investigation of Extractive Landscapes in Europe through the lens of landscape urbanism. The primary objective of this research is to illustrate the intricate co-dependency of capital, culture, and resources, with a specific emphasis on critical raw materials and fossil fuels. Through this internship, you will be actively involved in creating a series of maps, videos, and historical materials that challenge the conventional certainty of traditional mapping. Through these mediums, we aim to illuminate the complex relationships between various elements, utilizing a thick mapping approach to explore the hard and soft infrastructure that shapes our environment.

Internship Responsibilities: As an intern, you will play an integral role in supporting the development of critical investigations by employing innovative methodologies such as critical cartography. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Mapping and Visualization: Engage in the practice of critical cartography to map the nuanced relationships between capital, culture, and resources. This method encourages a holistic understanding, going beyond the limitations of traditional mapping.
2. Data Collection and Analysis: Gather data from Europe’s extractive landscapes and help to analyse the tangible and intangible influences of the landscapes through thick mapping as a tool.
3. Documentation: Assist in documenting research findings and visualizing potential pathways of the future of these landscapes.

Qualifications: We are seeking an international young designer and/or researcher who is:

• Background in landscape architecture, urban planning, environmental science, or related fields.
• Proficiency in GIS software and other mapping tools.
• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
• Passion for sustainability, environmental justice, and community engagement.
