Joshua Zake is a research fellow at the Centre for Development Research. He joined the Centre in November 2011.

Biography
Joshua Zake graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture specialising in Soil Science at Makerere University in Uganda. He holds a MSc in Soil Science from the same Institution and his thesis was on,'Enhancement of cattle manure quality and utilization for crop production on smallholder farming systems in Central Uganda.’ Over the past ten years he worked for Environmental Alert – a National Non Governmental Organisation in Uganda. He has experience and exposure on issues of sustainable agriculture and natural resources management and related policy analysis, lobbying and advocacy at community, local, national and international levels. He has engaged with smallholder farmers, policy makers, political leaders, researchers and scientists among others in the field of agriculture and natural resources management. Joshua is currently working on his Doctoral thesis on,'Understanding the impacts of climate change and variability on key selected smallholder banana farming systems in Central Uganda around the Lake Victoria basin,’ (supervised by Sophie Zechmeister-Boltenstern, Michael Hauser). This study is conducted in collaboration between the CDR, the Department of Forest- and Soil Sciences and Environmental Alert. It intends to undertake an in-depth understanding of smallholder banana farmers innovation systems for climate change adaptation and mitigation; evaluate climate change impacts of smallholder banana crop production systems; and propose practical recommendations for practice and policy change to advance climate change adaptation and mitigation in Central Uganda. Joshua Zake receives a scholarship from the APPEAR programme.
