Mixing effects in cereal-grain legume stands on the composition of the above ground dry matter yield and the grain yield in dependence of the mixing ratio

Summary

The problem was: how important are the proportions of a cereal component (wheat, oats) and a grain legume component (lens, pea) in a mixed stand under low input conditions for the amount and the composition of the above ground dry matter (grain + straw) yield and the composition of the grain yield. For investigation a two years factorial field experiment was conducted. In terms of substitution or addition mixed stands with increasing legume proportions were established. The above ground dry matter and the grain yields were separated into the contributions of the concerned species. The measured values were compared as to the expected values based on pure stands and the differences were defined as mixing effects. The substitution by increasing legume proportions resulted in positive mixing effects on the above ground dry matter yields and the cereal proportions of the dry matter and the grain yields.
The addition of increasing legume proportions to full cereal stands produced negative mixing effects on the above ground dry matter yields and smaller partly positive, partly negative effects on the cereal proportions, dependent on the concerned species.
