Timber-concrete-composite TCC ceiling systems are based on the idea of making the best possible use of the advantageous properties of both materials. While concrete, as the top layer, absorbs the compression forces, wood is used in the lower layer to withstand the tensile forces.

A new TCC system is currently being developed at the IHB with the main focus set on using the material as efficiently as possible. Material reduction is achieved by creating free spaces between the two interactive layers. The feasibility has been proven through manufacturing and load tests. In addition, an accompanying life cycle assessment showed the potential. The system was patented by BOKU in 2018.
