Content

Empirical research in economics and social sciences:
* Features of and differences from natural sciences.
* Importance of theories, concepts and hypotheses in the context of qualitative and quantitative research)
* Selection procedures (esp. sampling)


Data collection methods:
* Primary data (qualitative and quantitative methods; survey, observation, experiment; measurement instruments).
* Secondary data (sources, advantages and disadvantages)
* Planning and implementation of an empirical survey in the exercise part
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Familiarization with and application of the most important concepts and procedures of social science data collection.

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to name the basic concepts, principles, and methods of empirical economic and social research. They are able to develop research questions and hypotheses. They are able to differentiate and describe different variants of research designs on the basis of their characteristics (e.g. scientific-theoretical approach, epistemological interest, time of investigation). The students can assign appropriate methods for sampling, data collection and data analysis to these research designs - especially qualitative and quantitative studies. In particular, they will also be able to identify and demonstrate the quality of empirical economic and social research using recognized criteria.

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to develop research plans for empirical studies in the field of economics and social sciences. They are able to implement simple research projects by applying the learned methods of sampling, data collection and data analysis. They will be able to interpret the results of the research projects and generate recommendations based on them.
