Nutrients and pollutants in the soil-plant-system
To reduce our dependence on fossil resources for fertilizer and substrate production, we must use by-products / waste materials more efficiently. Our core activities on this topic include the development
of recycled fertilizers and peat-free substrates from various by-products of the agri-food or municipal sectors. We also develop and use novel approaches to fertilizer and soil testing with e.g. infinite-sink-based extraction methods to assess the nutrient availability of the products.
Furthermore, we investigate the fate and management of metals and metalloids in soils and in the rhizosphere. We develop approaches for plant-based remediation (phytoremediation) and metal recovery (phytomining).
