Retention and drainage of precipitation water in and along forest roads

The aim of this project is to develop a new water drainage system for forest roads based on the principle of retention. Instead of using dense surface layers, forest roads are to be constructed with permeable structures that delay water flow through retention and storage, allowing it to seep harmlessly into the surrounding forest. The intention is to reduce the concentrated runoff from pipe culverts to such an extent that, in future, pipe culverts will no longer be the starting point for the formation of mudslides and pluvial floods in residential areas. The reduced runoff of precipitation water on the surface of forest roads is also expected to reduce the erosive effect and thus also reduce damage caused by heavy rainfall. This will not only reduce the necessary maintenance measures but also extend the service life of the forest roads.
