Legalization

It is strictly necessary for a positive admission to legalise the documents needed for the admission procedure. The legalisation is required before application. The type of legalisation depends on the country your documents were issued in. A list of required legalisation per country can be found below.

Apostille - Member countries of the Hague convention

Documents and translations from these countries must have an official certificate ("Apostille") to be recognized in Austria.

The Apostille has to be submitted as original or the Apostille must be verifiable online (E-Apostille).

The Apostille is issued by the competent authority as designated by each Contracting State. The Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) website has a list of the competent authorities in each Contracting State.

Full legalization procedures

No bilateral or other agreements have been made with the country in which your documents were issued. Therefore, any documents or translations issued by your country must undergo full legalization procedures before they can be recognized in Austria.
The legalization confirmation must be affixed to every original document seperately.

Your documents must first be legalized in the issuing country (the final step in this process is submitting your documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country) before they can be legalized by the competent Austrian representative authority.

The legalisation by the competent Austrian representative authority has to be submitted as original.

Procedure:

1. Legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country in which the document was issued
2. Legalization by the Austrian consular authorities (embassy or consulate)
