TealHelix: Building Resilience Through Inclusive and Personalized Food Labeling

The institute's new research project is funded by the Commission of the European Communities (EU) and is carried out in collaboration with partners from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, KU Leuven, University of Groningen and Copenhagen Business School.

Project duration: September 1st, 2024 to August 31st, 2028

Project Description

Executive Summary

The research project TealHelix focuses on the sustainability labeling of food and investigates the effectiveness of new types of food labels. Overall, the aim is to enable European consumers to make informed, sustainable purchasing decisions. At the same time, the project seeks to develop new standards and guidelines for the provision of sustainability information in the food sector for the industry as well as policymakers.

The Institute of Marketing and Innovation at BOKU University, in collaboration with Copenhagen Business School and KU Leuven, is specifically addressing the needs and expectations of sustainability information from a consumer's perspective. As such, a new psychometric online tool will be developed to assess the personal sustainability of consumers. Their individual “sustainability score” will subsequently be aligned with the actual ecological, economic and social sustainability of different foods. Further, the online tool will provide consumers with personalized and databased recommendations on how they can make their food purchases more sustainable in the future.

The psychometric online tool is developed as an integrated app and will be available without costs to European consumers. The project is funded by the Commission of the European Union. The project runs from 1st of September 2024 until 31st of August 2028.
