Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Climate

CLIMATE SERVICES COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH ACTION ON CLIMATE PREDICTABILITY AND INTER-REGIONAL LINKAGES The Joint Programming Initiative “Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe” (JPI Climate) was established as part of the effort to deal with climate change as one of the Grand Challenges. JPI Climate seeks to facilitate integrated climate knowledge and decision support services for societal innovation towards a climate-friendly and climate-proof Europe. JPI Climate provides a platform for aligning national research priorities, coordinating the research base in Europe, and responding to the needs of the European society, through innovative inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches and flexible collaborative governance. The Belmont Forum is a group of the world’s major and emerging funders of global environmental change research and international science councils. It aims to accelerate delivery of the environmental research needed to remove critical barriers to sustainability by aligning and mobilizing international resources. Belmont Forum funding is intended to add value to existing national investments and support international partnership in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scientific endeavors. This call for proposals aims to contribute to the overall challenge of developing climate services with a focus on inter-regional linkages role in climate variability and predictability. A particular focus of interest is the drivers and mechanisms linking Poles & Monsoons for societal usefulness of climate services. Major impediments indeed still exist to having efficient climate services at regional and local level, because of little or poorly understood climate processes (in part caused by a paucity of observations), inadequate dissemination of scientific knowledge, conflicts between climatic and non-climatic stressors and lack of action by decision makers and the human society at large.
