Since 2010, Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes have seen alarming water level rises, endangering ecosystems and communities. The Great Lakes research project, a collaboration between the Technical University of Kenya and BOKU University, identified increased rainfall as the key driver. Some areas saw a 318% surge in extreme rainfall events, raising flood risks and economic losses. The project developed a Hydrological Information System, supported multiple research exchanges, and contributed to policy recommendations for improved water management.
