Automating core logging: ML-based pipeline for jet grout columns

As part of the GRID project, this class presents a machine-learning-based approach to automating core logging for jet grout columns.

Time: 12.10.2026 at 10am

Place: SIMH-DG-02, Simonyhaus, Peter-Jordan-Strasse 65, 1180 Vienna

Participants will learn how image-based data processing and machine-learning methods can support the identification, classification, and documentation of core samples. The session focuses on developing an efficient, consistent, and scalable pipeline for geotechnical data evaluation.

Topics include:

  • Fundamentals of core logging for jet grout columns
  • Preparation and processing of core images
  • Machine-learning methods for automated feature recognition
  • Data annotation, model training, and validation
  • Integration into geotechnical project documentation
  • Opportunities and limitations of automation in engineering practice

The class is aimed at students, researchers, and professionals interested in geotechnical engineering, digital construction, machine learning, and automated data analysis.
