NATURE-DEMO Project Achieves 18-Month Milestone

BOKU Welcomed Consortium to Vienna for Key Review and Implementation Planning

As part of the ongoing progress of the Horizon Europe project Nature-based Solutions for Demonstrating Climate-Resilient Critical Infrastructure (NATURE-DEMO), BOKU University successfully hosted an in-person Consortium Meeting in Vienna, bringing together 23 European partners to celebrate a significant milestone: 18-months of intensive collaboration, research, and exchange within the 4-year project lifecycle.

The three-day meeting (Vienna, 17–19 November 2025) provided an important opportunity to reflect on the substantial progress achieved so far, address current implementation challenges, and collectively align on priorities for the next project phase. Discussions were highly constructive, covering:

  • Reviewing research achievements and key outcomes
  • Advancing the development of digital decision support tools
  • Planning actions across the real-world demonstrators' sites
  • Strengthening Partner communication, enhancing synergy, and improving efficient exchange within the consortium.

As a core partner in the NATURE-DEMO, BOKU is leading the efforts with the dedicated involvement of three key institutes: the Institute of Mountain Risk Engineering (IAN), the Institute of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape Construction (IBLB), and the Institute for Structural Engineering (KOIN).

The institutes are actively supporting and contributing to the Austrian demonstrators’ sites, all located in the Alpine region. The three sites together represent a continuum of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) development – from theoretical design and monitoring, through infrastructure renewal, to mature and proven implementation strategies.

We look forward to sharing more progress as we move into the next phase!
