The course will give a special emphasis on the historical-institutional dimension of the EU: history of the EU, political ideas, institutions, legal aspects, decision making and the single market as the economic heart of the EU and key driving force of all aspects of integration.

The course will not focus on the different EU-policies, thus it will not explore the many policies of the EU (agriculture, employment, cohesion policy ´).

Learning basics about the European integration means that you should get familiar with a lot of historical facts, data and arguments, which are dealt with the scientific literature.

Since the subject is constantly evolving, the course material may not cover the latest development always. This implies that the comprehensive and actual concern of the subject will require additional information and arguments. The duty to deliver some "new" material is due to the lecturer (with handouts etc.)

The course will follow the seminar (discussion) format.

The aim of the course is to broaden the students understanding of European integration. A better knowledge of institutions and processes will help to enhance opportunities for participation in employment in the EU and for a better understanding of the implications of the European "citizenship".

The students should learn basics to a better understanding of the European Union (EU).
