The lecture provides a fundamental understanding of the environmental and socioeconomic basis of international agriculture and related food production systems. The emphasis is on an understanding environment- crop-management interactions underlying adapted cropping systems in different parts of the world.


1st Unit:
Organizational planning

Socio-economic challanges for agriculture in the next decades

2nd Unit:
Agriculture in times of globalization - trade and agriculture
=>Working with FAOStat-continued


3rd Unit:
Natural boundaries - climate, soils and cropping systems
=>Working with the Harmonized World Soil Database


4th Unit:
Climate change and agriculture
=>Students’ contributions: Snap shots of rural diversity


5th Unit:
How to achieve the millinium goals?
=> Guest lecture: Indonesia – Sustainable rice intensification
=> Guest lecture: Soil health training in Mozambique – an example of research for development

Lehrziel

Students will have a general overview on international food production systems, become familiar withFAO strategies for international agriculture, get knowledge on current trends to sustainable management systems and are able to work with online databases (FAO Statistical Database, Harmonized World Soil Database, Global Agro-Ecological Zone Model).
