What? Laboratory course + writing a mini-paper
Where? Research laboratories of the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, BOKU (see below)
When? Practical course during one week in the period from 28.06- 16.07.2021; writing mini-paper afterwards at home (see below)

In this course students acquire hand-on experience in modern analytical techniques. In collaboration with researchers from the group of Instrumental Analytical Chemistry and Metabolomics, students will perform analysis of metabolites, elements and/or isotopes. The topics and samples reflect ongoing research projects of the group in the fields of bio(techno)logy, environmental and/or food sciences.

Students can choose between the following analytical techniques:
•Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
•Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
•(Multi-collector) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC) ICP-MS; for this technique the course will take place partly in BOKU Muthgasse 18 and partly at the UFT-Tulln

This practical course 771318 is a follow up of the course 771317. We recommend taking both courses in the same semester. This allows getting a deeper understanding of analytical workflows and how a modern analytical research laboratory works.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Knowledge of current analytical methods: 771108 Analytische Chemie VO.
Practical experience in analytical chemistry: 771106 Instrumentelle Analytische und Physikalische Chemie UE.


After completing the course, students will be able to plan and perform analysis using organic or inorganic mass spectrometry techniques. They will learn basic data evaluation and interpretation. Students will be able to summarize their findings in the form of a mini-paper.
