Whether in plant or livestock breeding, watershed rehabilitation, the management of flash floods or the co-design of food environments in informal urban settlements -- participatory methods are core to any change process, especially in complex, fragile environments. Participatory methods empower people to use their material, social or political resources to improve their livelihoods. This course familiarizes students with a wide range of co-design methods (e.g. Participatory Rural Appraisal, Farmer Participatory Research, Agroecosystems Analysis etc.), applicable in development research and the facilitation of change processes. Besides practical skills training, the course provides students with a toolbox to analyze and facilitate change processes in groups and communities. It also encourages students to engage in theoretical reflections about the scope and the limitations of participatory methods. Although the course focuses on the Global South, change management and co-design processes that draw on participatory methods are of global relevance.
Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

This course is the third out of three, offering students insights into the management of farm and food system transitions in complex environments of the global south. The other two courses are Livelihood system dynamics in rural development (934304) and Facilitating change for sustainable development (934305).
Lehrziel

1. List different participatory methods and approaches and how they evolved.
2. Describe participatory approaches and methods used in developing countries and why they are used.
3. Identify epistemologies of different stakeholder groups.
4. Identify consequences of different approaches of collaborative research and management.
5. Apply participatory methods in a self-reflective mode.
6. Assess strengths of different participative approaches.
7. Master methods in different professional roles (notably as researcher, process facilitator).
8. Integrate participatory methods into research on and management of natural resources.
9. Design participatory methods and applications based on training examples.
