Lehrinhalt

The excursion this year leads to Flims (switzerland), where the karst water flow system and its use will be studied in detail. Excursion schedule: see BOKUlearn for detailed information.

Rainwater that is hitting the earth is going to rivers, and finally to the sea. Its scientific study is called hydrology. A part of the rainwater sinks into the soil and the rock, before emerging at springs again. The study of that water is called hydrogeology, because not only the properties of the water, but also the ones of the soils and rocks are important.
The Hydrogeology course offered at BOKU deals with this underground water. Infiltration, transport, and exit at springs are explained. The "traditional" hydrogeology deals with porous, unconsolidated rocks and large groundwater bodies. However, large parts of Earth's surface consist of limestone which can be dissolved by water. This process, called "karstification", is reponsible for the presence of caves and large springs, and is of great importance for drinking water supply. The course also deals, therefore, with technical means of exploiting groundwater resources, and keeps an eye upon unsustainable techniques as well as potential dangers of civil works such as tunnels or houses.
The hydrogeology course is intended for all students that would like to get an overview of underground water and associated issues.
