Lehrinhalt

The main goal of the course will be the presentation of riparian vegetation and ecology basics, the effects of impacts and key aspects of management. In addition a special focus will be given to the description of relationships between aquatic/riparian vegetation and physical habit parameters. The course will conclude with a hands on training on process based assessment methods based on spatialtemporal analysis conducted in field. The content will be presented and discussed based on real world national and international case studies (River Drau, Lech, Danube, Kootenai-USA/CAN, Baker River-Chile, Nakdong River-South Korea). In particular the contents of the course are:
•Introduction in riparian ecosystem concept and key aspects of floodplain ecology
•Floodplain vegetation: phytocenosis, indicator species, ecology and occurrence
•Pedosphare and soil
•Plant succession and recycling
•Assessment of riparian ecosystems
•Excursion/lab in the field: recording and assessment (River Schwechat/Traismauer)
•Analysis of field data (River Schwechat)
•Riparian ecosystem modelling – Introduction and case studies

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Lehrziel

- Discuss key aspects in riparian vegetation ecology and fluvial processes
- Identify indicator plants and vegetation types of riparian ecosystems
- Apply standard methods for recording and mapping vegetation and physical habitat parameters in the field and fundamentals in modelling of riparian ecosystems
