Lehrinhalt

The course aims to introduce the concept of development and to deepen the understanding of development efforts on national and international level. By analyzing case studies of the international agrarian sector we cast a critical view on power relations and participatory and sustainable approaches to development. Students should get a deeper understanding of development policies and global interdependencies by actively participating in the course.

The course is divided in 4 modules:
MODULE (1) Development and development cooperation (Christine Altenbuchner):
-Definition of development and development cooperation (What is development?)
-Measurement of development and wealth (How to measure development?)
-Development theories (How to trigger development?)

MODULE (2) International players and power relations (Xiomara F. Quiñones-Ruiz):
-International players in the development cooperation (e.g., United Nations, World Bank)
-Power relationships and paradoxes in the international agrarian sector with specific case study analysis (e.g. coffee, tomatoes, definition of quality standards / presentation of research results (e.g. Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia))

MODULE (3) Development cooperation in practice (Christine Altenbuchner)
-Structure of development cooperation in Austria and in the EU (governmental and non-governmental organizations)

MODULE (4) Sustainable development approaches (Christine Altenbuchner):
-Scientific approach to sustainable development (Innovation, participatory approaches, community capitals, etc.)
