The course provides an introduction, theoretical background and the application of open-source GIS software and tools, with focus on applications used in Hydrology and Water Management. Apart from the application of standard GIS-tools or the mapping and visualisation of GIS-data, methods frequently used in Hydrology and Water Management will be introduced, including catchment and stream network delineation, analysis of flood risk or other spatio-temporal analysis related to Hydrology and Water Management. As software QGIS and R/RStudio will be used.

Participants of this course will be able to use GIS to support investigations in the field of hydrology and water management, including
- the application of standard GIS-tools (e.g. spatial joins, overlay, buffer, etc.)
- mapping and visualisation of GIS-data and results
- catchment and stream network delineation
- analysis of flood hazard/risk assessment
- analysis of spatio-temporal trends in rainfall and vegetation
