This course introduces the students to the concept of futures studies in natural hazard management (theoretical background as well as the various methods). In particular, the course gives an introduction to explain the differences between various scenario techniques and approaches, point out the advantages and disadvantages (uncertainty and risk) of each method as well as to select a suitable scenario method for a specific problem. In particular, we will explore scenario technique using the tool of cost-benefit analysis in natural hazard risk management. This course will provide you with the theoretical background and practical skills required to critically assess a cost-benefit analysis and to perform your own cost-benefit analysis.

By the end of the course, you should be able to conduct your own cost-benefit analysis on any issue of sufficient interest, as well as be able to criticize other cost-benefit analyses. Carry out independent research based on secondary data, present (orally and written) research results in a coherent manner.
