This course integrates landscape planning and design with sustainable action to capacitate and empower students and community stakeholders in making meaningful, collaborative decisions about possible futures for the local community and local landscapes. It involves a collaborative task between the students and people who live and work in the community in exploring alternative futures that can realistically emerge within a particular landscape and its natural resources.

This project focuses on the co-creation of a community vision for the Masisi community, located at the border of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. It integrates theoretical approaches of participatory planning, foresight methods (scenarios) and landscape planning. The project pursues scenario planning as a tool to trigger the engagement of different actors and interested parties and to jointly develop a community vision, based on local and regional livelihoods and needs, National Park and biodiversity conservation requirements and the given natural and landscape resources. Hence, the main objectives of this project are:
(a) develop a scenario/visioning concept/program,
(b) develop a program for the participatory visioning process in Masisi community;
(c) prepare the system analysis that is required for such scenario/visioning processes
(d) implement and facilitate the participatory community visioning program in the Masisi community in South Africa
(e) cooperate with students from University of Johannesburg (UJ) and local actors

The course will include different problem/project-based-learning methods which include: (i) develop the theoretical basis of participatory planning, visioning/scenario planning (incl. knowledge types), (ii) land-use/landscape analysis and analysis of natural/infrastructure resources (and other, partly GIS analysis); (iii) develop and prepare a participatory planning/ community visioning process in the context of local livelihoods, biodiversity conservation and spatial development, (iv) implement the process in practice and facilitate a multi-actor community visioning process, (v) collaborate with and learn from students and colleagues from University of Johannesburg and local youth from Masisi community who will collaborate with you; (vi) transform the results into a community vision (brochure) and (vi) reflect on the learning experience and write a reflective seminar paper.

Project/Fieldwork in South-Africa: 15-26. May 2023,
Departure from Johannesburg to Masisi: 14 May VERY (6:00 am) early in the morning, (you must arrive in Johannesburg at least on 14. May),
Community visioning Project in Masisi: appr. 5-6 days
Planned excursion to Gonarezhou National Park (Zimbabwe): app. 2-3 days
End: 26 May in Johannesburg

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

•Fundamental knowledge on participatory planning and community development
•Fundamental knowledge in biodiversity conservation and nature protection
•GIS skills (at least mandatory courses in landscape planning curriculum)
•Experience in project-based learning (e.g. other project courses from the landscape planning
•Interested in working in different cultural context
•Patience and resilience to deal with the specific conditions of the project in particular regarding the fieldwork


•Understand the fundamental theory of participatory approaches, scenarios and foresight methods
•Create a system analysis, focusing on the analysis land-use, landscape development and natural resources (e.g. GIS analysis),
•Prepare the newly created data in an accessible way for the participatory visioning and scenario process
•Develop and prepare a process-design for a participatory community visioning/scenario-process
•Implement and facilitate the process on the local level in the Masisi region, South Africa
•Collaborate with students from University of Johannesburg, different actors and interested parties
•Evaluate the different scenarios and carry out a back-casting exercise, developing different steps required to move towards the preferred scenario
•Translate the results into a community visioning brochure, poster and other deliverables
•Communicate the results to different stakeholders, actors and interested parties
•Reflect on the learning/process and put the outputs and write an academic seminar paper about the project (854319)
