Lehrinhalt

The production of primary and secondary metabolites, such as antibiotics, involve fermentation batch scales of 100-300 tons. These processes rely on the economics of large scale, but are rarely patented, which is why the current state of the art is not found in the public literature.
In contrast proteinaceous biopharmaceuticals not differ in that they are heavily patented, but there processes are vastly different design, scale, economics, but not least of all regulatory requirements.
Based on this backdrop, the course will cover the primarily the technological aspects of fungal production of Penicllin-type antibiotics and compare this to animal cell technology, in comparative fashion, considering scales, economics and the regulatory framework.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge in technical microbiology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, mechanical engineering;

Lehrziel

Students will be able to determine and describe the strategies and process technologies for secondary metabolites and specifically for penicillin production and explain the contrasting differences with the technologies and product related aspects for proteinaceous biopharmaceuticals.
